Skincare Product of the Month: Health Y Sol Tallow Soap
As the owner of a spa, I do try to keep up to date with skin care trends. One recent trend that I have been seeing (it’s all-over social media) is the use of beef tallow for skin care. The use of tallow isn’t truly new though. It has been used for many years.
What is beef tallow? Beef tallow is rendered from fat from cows, typically from around the kidneys and loins. It is slowly heated to melt it and remove impurities. Beef tallow closely mimics our skin’s sebum, meaning that your skin can absorb its nutrients more effectively. It is rich in vitamins A, D, E, &K. Vitamin A promotes skin cell turnover without the irritation of retinols. Vitamin D aids in skin repair and may help soothe conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that may help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals and UV exposure. Vitamin K helps support skin healing. Pure beef tallow is all natural and biodegradable, and not harmful to the environment. It can be used in soap, balms, creams and other skin care products.
But not all these products with beef tallow are created equally. My personal favorite beef tallow skin product is tallow soap, and my favorite company is Health Y Sol for many reasons. Here are a few of them:
Health Y Sol is a family business founded in 2022 by the husband -and- wife team, Matthew and Haley Tam, who were looking to overcome their own personal skin care issues and health obstacles.
The soaps are formulated with all natural ingredients, including ethically sourced beef tallow, coconut oil and organic olive oil. They are made of ingredients you could literally eat (might not want to, but you could!). And beef tallow soap production is a way to use an ingredient that would otherwise go to waste.
There are no artificial fragrances (only natural essential oils are used). They are free of synthetic ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, phthalates or artificial dyes. They are nourishing, gentle and thoughtfully prepared. They are generally well tolerated even for most people with sensitive skin. I have used all their soaps; I have very dry sensitive skin and tolerate them very well. As with any skin care product though, there may be those very sensitive people who need to do a patch test and start slowly with beef tallow soap to rule out sensitivity. I also think the use of only natural essentials oils gives them less of that faint “beefy” smell you can get with some other tallow products.
Health Y Sol soaps are made in the USA, clearly labeled and have eco-friendly packaging. They use minimalist packaging without plastic or unnecessary frills. All the products have the ingredients clearly listed so you know exactly what you are getting.
I also like the fact that the bars are harder than some other brands, so they hold up without becoming crumbly and last longer, but they still suds up.
Health Y Sol has a variety of delicately scented soap bars, and I have tried most of them. I have also tried the liquid Honey and Tallow Soap. Here are some of the ones that I like:
