Essential Oil of the Week: Coriander Essential Oil

I think that most people are familiar with the popular herb Cilantro and the famous spice Coriander. These two things actually come from the same plant. While Coriander, as the spice, is famous worldwide, not as many people are aware of its health benefits as an essential oil.  Coriander essential oil is extracted from the seeds of the cilantro/coriander plant through steam distillation. It has been used for many years in both traditional and Ayurvedic medicine and is known for its fresh, sweet and slightly spicy scent with subtle notes of citrus. 

Ever since I started doing this blog, I have been trying to research things that may help perimenopausal and menopausal aged women deal with issues and symptoms commonly experienced during this period, such as mood swings, decreased libido, changes in skin and hair, anxiety and depression. Coriander essential oil is helpful for all these problems and many more.

Coriander has many relaxing properties.  It is known for soothing the mind and soul. It has a compound in it called Linalool (this is also in Lavender oil). Linalool reacts with your brain’s GABA receptors, which are responsible for your response to stress, lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Coriander essential oil also helps muscles relax. Mix some in your diffuser or mix with a carrier oil and use as a muscle rub.

Coriander essential oil can boost mental clarity.  Ever felt or heard about menopausal brain fog?  Coriander essential oil has uplifting properties that can help you clear your brain fog and improve focus. Put a little of the oil in a diffuser to help you have a sharp and clear mind!

Coriander essential oil is good for your skin and your hair.  Mix a few drops of Coriander essential oil with ½ teaspoon of coconut oil and rub it into the ends of your hair to prevent breakage and give it back some shine.  Use ½ teaspoon of Argan Oil and one drop of Coriander essential oil together and apply to face to prevent breakouts (avoid the mouth and eyes).

Spice up your love life, literally!  One of the oldest known uses of Coriander essential oil was as an aphrodisiac.  Ancient Egyptians used Coriander seed oil in their love potions. These effects are believed to be due to the component phytoestrogen which stimulates hormone production and thus increases sex drive. So, if you are looking to put some va-va-voom back in your love life, put some Coriander essential oil in your diffuser and set the mood for a super romantic date night!

 Coriander essential oil is good for pain. Coriander essential oil has components such as terpineol and terpinolene which are analgesic agents that reduce pain. It is known  to help headaches, toothaches and other pain such as joint pain and muscle spasms. It should always be mixed with a carrier oil when applied topically.

Coriander essential oils have a myriad of diverse health and wellness benefits. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties. I just touched on a few that I think would be of interest to perimenopausal or menopausal women.  It can be used topically mixed with a carrier oil, In a diffuser or in a warm bath. In this blog I do not discuss any internal uses because I don’t feel that any of these oils should be ingested without the express supervision or advice of your own healthcare provider.
