Lemon Balm, also known as Melissa essential oil, is a popular aromatic essential oil that has been used for centuries. It has a wide range of therapeutic benefits including antiviral properties, antimicrobial properties, analgesic properties and antispasmodic properties. In addition, it is deeply comforting and is used to relax and restore the body. This makes it helpful for women who are experiencing the anxiety, mood swings and insomnia that often can go along with Menopause. It is distilled from the bright green, mint like leaves of the Lemon Balm plant and has a strong, fresh herbal aroma with lemony notes. The name “Melissa” means honeybee and bees love this plant!
People use Lemon Balm in a variety of ways. Its relaxing anti-anxiety properties make it an excellent choice for the diffuser, and it’s anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties make it a good ingredient mixed with a carrier for massage or added to a warm bath. It has also been used topically for treatment for fever blisters. While there are some preparations that contain Lemon Balm that are ingested, this is not safe for everyone, there are conditions that this would be contra indicated in, so never do this without first checking with your own healthcare provider. My favorite ways to experience Lemon Balm are in my diffuser or in a Hydrosol preparation that you can spray.
