Why Masami Stands Out

If there ever were a brand made for this column, it would be Masami. This month’s featured products are technically haircare rather than skincare, but they share the same thoughtful, clean-beauty approach: Masami products are vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated without more than 1,300 ingredients commonly considered harmful, including parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.

The Key Ingredient: Japanese Makabu Seaweed

Masami’s standout ingredient is Japanese Makabu seaweed, which grows off the coast of Japan and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and cuisine for its nutrient-rich profile. The Makabu used in Masami products is hand-harvested, sun-dried, and carefully extracted on family-owned farms near the pristine waters of Ise Bay.

I’m drawn to brands that empower women, carry a positive social message, and show a real commitment to sustainability. Masami checks all three boxes. The company was co-founded by CEO Lynn Power, James Hammett, and Masahiro Sasaki, and their mission is reflected not only in the products themselves, but also in the way the brand operates.

Masami also partners with SeaTrees, an organization focused on regenerating coastal ecosystems. For every Masami product sold, one square foot of seaweed is planted, helping absorb carbon, rebuild ocean health, and provide habitat for marine life. It also provides economic opportunities for the Japanese seaweed farmers.

After the destruction of the 2011 Tsunami, Masami launched the Masami Institute which supports local marine biology to help protect marine life and the surrounding communities. It also provides economic opportunities for the seaweed farmers in Japan. Their plastic bottles are recyclable, and they offer reusable glass and aluminum bottles with biodegradable refill packs as they work to reduce plastic waste.
