Creatine is one of the most researched supplements for exercise
performance, strength, and muscle support. It has long been used in
athletics and weight training, but interest has expanded beyond the
gym. Emerging research suggests creatine may also play a role in
brain health, cognition, women’s health, and healthy aging. While
social media has increased attention around creatine, its strongest
reputation comes from decades of scientific study and a well-
established safety profile for healthy adults when used
appropriately.
What Is Creatine?
Creatine is a natural compound made from three amino acids:
arginine, glycine, and methionine. It helps the body produce quick
energy, making it especially important for activities that require

creatine in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. The rest—about 1
to 2 grams per day—comes from foods such as meat, fish, and

stored in the brain and other tissues.

What Are Creatine Supplements Used For?
Creatine supplements are commonly used to support strength,
muscle growth, recovery, and quick energy during high-intensity
activities such as sprinting, swimming, and weightlifting. More
recent research is exploring possible benefits for brain health, mood,
healthy aging, sarcopenia, and women’s health. These newer areas
are promising, but some still need more high-quality research before
firm conclusions can be made.
Who May Benefit from Creatine Supplements?
Creatine may be helpful for several groups, especially when
combined with consistent exercise, adequate protein intake, and
proper hydration.
•Vegans and vegetarians: Because dietary creatine comes
mainly from animal-based foods such as meat, poultry, fish,
and dairy, people who avoid these foods may have lower
creatine intake and may benefit from supplementation.
•Older adults: For adults over 65, creatine may help support
muscle strength and reduce age-related muscle loss, known as
sarcopenia, especially when paired with strength training two
to five times per week.
•Active individuals and athletes: Creatine may benefit people
who perform repeated, high-intensity, short-duration activities
by helping muscles recover between bursts of effort.
•Women, especially during perimenopause and menopause:
Women may have lower creatine stores than men, and
hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can
affect muscle mass, energy, and recovery. Creatine may help
support strength, lean muscle maintenance, metabolic health,
and cognitive resilience when used as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Creatine Myths and Misconceptions
•Creatine is not a steroid. Creatine is a natural compound found
in the body, not a steroid or hormone. It does not raise
testosterone levels. While it does not directly “build” muscle on
its own, it can support strength, power, and muscle
maintenance when paired with resistance training.
•Creatine does not cause kidney damage in healthy adults.
Research does not show that creatine harms kidney function in
healthy people when used appropriately. However, anyone with
decreased kidney function or kidney disease should talk with
their healthcare provider before taking creatine or any other
supplement. Anyone using Creatine supplements should be
careful to be well hydrated.
•Creatine may cause temporary water-weight gain. Some people
notice a small increase in weight during the first few weeks
because creatine helps muscles hold water. This is not fat gain
and is usually temporary.
•Creatine does not cause hair loss and baldness. This fear came
from a single 2009 study on rugby players that noticed a
change in a specific hormone called DHT, but it do not actually
measure hair loss specifically and subsequent studies have
failed to show any link between standard Creatine and hair
loss.
•You do not have to “load” high doses or “cycle” on and off
Creatine. This is unnecessary. Taking a simple consistent dose
of 3-5 grams a day will fully saturate muscles and maintain the
levels safely for long term use.
Quality Matters When Picking a Creatine Supplement
•When choosing a creatine supplement—or any
supplement—look for third-party testing certifications, such as
NSF certification, and check product reviews. Read the label
carefully: avoid products that promise miracle results, claim to
cure diseases, or list a “proprietary blend.” The company’s
