Spring is finally here, and summer is right around the corner. If you are like me, winter is hard on your skin. The cold weather is drying to the skin, and by the end of winter my scaly legs could give a dragon a run for its money!  Not to mention turning super pale and ashy.  If you want those legs and feet to look good without the pantyhose or long pants, now is the time to start preparing. Here are some things to help.

Dry Brushing:

Dry brushing is an Aryuvedic medicine technique that has been around for centuries.  Proponents of this treatment believe that it has many health benefits including exfoliating the skin, increasing circulation, detoxifying the skin and (according to some) improving the appearance of cellulite. The idea behind it is that the coarse fibers of the brush remove dry skin and open up pores and this improves the skin’s ability to remove toxins. It makes your skin smoother and softer and may support collagen production.

You practice dry brushing with a natural fiber brush, starting at your feet and moving up your body with wide circular, clockwise motions. Use lighter pressure on areas that have more sensitive skin and firmer pressure on areas like the soles of your feet. Do your arms after your legs, moving from your hands up towards your armpits. Take a cool shower next to remove the dead skin. Be careful not to brush over any area with rashes, wounds, cuts or infection.

Amazon has a good selection of dry brushes. I like this one with the longer handle:

Moisturize Inside and Out!:

Moisturizing is an essential part of any skincare routine, but it is often neglected. Proper hydration helps your skin look radiant, feel smooth and even helps protect from environmental stressors and pollutants.  According to an online article from NERD Skincare, Moisturizers are skincare products that hydrate and nourish your skin and work by creating a barrier on the skin’s surface that locks in moisture and prevents it from evaporating. They contain ingredients that attract water to the skin like glycerin, hyaluronic acid or urea, as well as the ingredients that seal it in such as lanolin or mineral oil. There are many moisturizers out on the market that are excellent. One of my favorites for legs and feet is the Isdin Complete Body Hydration Moisturizing Package. It comes with Uradin Lotion 10 and Uradin Podus Foot Cream. You can find it on the Isdin Link:

And it’s not just your outsides that count when you are talking repairing and preventing dry skin. Drinking lots of water is super important! Hydrated skin starts on the inside. One thing I have been doing is drinking water with molecular hydrogen. While there is still further research to be done, Molecular hydrogen is believed to have therapeutic antioxidants that can help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. There are molecular hydrogen tablets that you can add to water. There are also water bottles that hydrogenate the water for you.  Here are the links:

Get Some Color On:

I always emerge from winter with pasty white legs. This is not a good look if you want to wear pretty summer dresses without pantyhose. Getting too much sun without protection is also not a good plan, so what do you do? Self-tanner is a great tool if you get the right one and apply it right. If you don’t you might end up striped and a weird orange shade which is also not a good look.  I find the self-tanner that you apply with a mitt the easiest to do. The best one I have found with a mitt is by Beauty by Earth. Another company that I love for self-tanner is Allies of Skin. They have a self-tanner that comes with SPF in it already. As you know I am partial to companies that have a positive social message and Allies of Skin has a great one, plus their products are top quality. Here are the links:

Now Tone Them UP!

Now that you have silky smooth, tan legs-tone them up for summer to look really pretty

in shorts and dresses. There are lots of fairly easy toning exercises that can get you started in toning up those legs. Using resistance bands, walking, and wearing leggings that have built in resistance bands are a few things that will tone and strengthen you without causing strain.

The fitness bands from Synergee are easy to use, inexpensive and come in a multi-pack. You can just use them and stash them in a drawer when you are done. You can even use them to do chair exercises Here is the link:

Another really cool thing that I have started using lately are the leggings that have the resistance bands built in. You can really tell the difference if you wear them and it’s like passive exercise. There are lots of online sources. One of my favorites is Fanke. They are a little more expensive, but they are high quality. Here is a link:

Don’t Forget Your Feet!

Feet can get pretty rough in the winter too. Mine get dry and cracked, and winter shoes and boots can cause thickened tough skin.  Using a good foot scrub can help immensely. I found a really nice recipe for a foot scrub using essential oils. It’s called May Flower Foot Scrub from Aromatics International Essential Oils. Here is the recipe:

15 drops of geranium oil

15 drops of patchouli oil

10 drops of May Chang oil

4ozs Pink Himalyan Salt

4 fluid oz of Jojoba oil

1-8 oz jar

Put the salt in the jar and mix in the Jojoba oil. Add the essential oils, mix well and store in a cool dark area. In the shower or tub use a small amount to scrub your feet, then rinse with water. Repeat every 3-4 days.

Everything to make this foot scrub as well as recipes for other footcare and lotions to help your feet get ready for summer can be found at Aromatics International:

I hope you enjoyed these tips. The resources in this article can also be found on the resource page of the website.
