Helpful Tips For Dry Winter Skin

Does your skin get super dry in the winter? I don’t know about you, but my dry scaly winter skin could give a dragon a run for its money right now. Cold air, dry indoor heat, harsh winter wind and lower humidity both inside and out all contribute to winter dry skin.

The right skin care products can help, and there are other steps to take as well:

Hydrate from the Inside Out- Drinking plenty of hydrating fluids is important all of the time, and of particular importance when trying to battle the dry skin of winter. Proper nutrition and eating foods high in Omega 3’s and antioxidants can help also. Some of these include salmon, walnuts and avocados.

Use Sunscreen even in the Winter. You might be tempted to skip sunscreen in the winter but you shouldn’t do it. There are still harmful UV rays in the winter that stress your skin’s moisture barrier, which is necessary for maintaining skin health and hydration. My favorite winter sunscreen is Isdin’s Fusion Water Magic because it is light, sheer, non-greasy as well as moisturizing. Here is a link to check it out:

Moisturize right after you wash your skin.

Washing your skin strips it of its natural oils. Since these oils are what lock in the moisture, it’s important to replace them. So, moisturize your skin every time you wash it.

Adjust your skin care and bathing routine. Hot water dries your skin out more. Lowering your bath or shower temperature can help. Avoid using abrasive washcloths or sponges and select soaps that do not excessively dry the skin. You may also try running a humidifier in your house.

Look for high quality moisturizers for your face and body

Some good ingredients to look for in a moisturizer are:

  • Ceramides

  • Hyaluronic

  • Glycerin

  • Urea

Some things to avoid in a moisturizer include

  • Artificial Fragrance

  • Dyes

  • Alcohol

Some of the best moisturizers that I have tried this season are the Hyaluronic Acid Face Cream by Beauty By Earth and the Uradin Body Moisturizer by Isdin.

The Beauty By Earth moisturizer is fragrance-free, cruelty-free, plastic neutral and is in sustainable packaging. These are all important to me.

Isdin’s Uradin lotion for the body is the best thing that I have found for my scaly dry winter legs. This miracle worker goes on smoothly and is not sticky, greasy or irritating. Isdin is one of my favorite companies (also earth friendly and socially responsible) for skincare products, and I especially love this product. I literally use it every day. Check it out here:

And remember, while most winter dry skin can be handled with some good skin care products and good skincare routines, if you experience cracks in your skin, bleeding, severe itching, inflammation or persistent red patches you should consult your own healthcare provider.
